New Scouts
Welcome to Troop 223!
For those of you who are WEBELOs, there will be a Pack 223 WEBELOS graduation at Calvary Christian School. Only those who are WEBELOS in Pack 223 and their parents should attend. Bring your cameras. For all dates referenced below, view the Troop Calendar for specific dates and times.
The first troop meeting will be at 7:30 pm on the first Tuesday of February, at the Parish Center at St. Matthews. It will last till 9 p.m. We will be assigning your sons to New Scout Patrols. They will remain in these patrols until Aquatics Day, in June. All new scouts must attend, as we have a huge interest in the troop this year! At that time, troop t-shirts will be handed out. If you haven’t filled out an application, you can do so at that time.
There will be a meeting every Tuesday night, from 7:30 pm to 9. If you are on a Winter Break, that’s okay. There will be a meeting every Tuesday night until Emerald Bay in July. All New Scouts must attend the entire week at Emerald Bay and all New Scout ASM are expected to attend the whole week. There will be no scout meetings after Emerald Bay and before the last weekend in August, prior to Labor Day Weekend.
On the last Tuesday in February, we will be having a Court of Honor. All parents should be in attendance, especially the moms, as they will be presented with Mother’s pins. There will also be an induction ceremony. All Scouts and ASMs must wear their Class A uniform to this event (see below for uniform information).
Our first campout will be in March. There will also be monthly camp outs held on the first full weekend of the month. There is one exception, if the campout falls on Easter weekend, in which case it will follow the weekend after. It is important that the scouts make the camp outs and troop meetings as we will work on merit badges at these times. 21 merit badges are required for Eagle rank, 12 of which are required subjects. We will work on the required merit badges and other ones at those camp outs and troop meetings. After Aquatics Day/Pot Luck Court of Honor the first weekend of June (note this is not an overnight outing), your sons will be assigned to permanent patrols and have patrol meetings. At those meetings they will work on merit badges. I am attaching a calendar, with this e-mail.
As far as uniforms are concerned, for the first meeting, scouts should wear their green shorts and troop shirt if they have them and if they are WEBELOS, they should wear their Webelos t-shirt, or any non offensive t-shirt. Troop t-shirts will be handed out at this meeting. The troop t-shirt and the green zip-off pants (scouts must wear the shorts), white socks, and tennis shoes is considered the troop’s Class B uniform. This uniform should be worn to all troop meetings, other than Court of Honors. It should be worn to all camp outs, unless otherwise specified.
The Class A uniform consists of Khaki shirt, green shorts, green scout socks, neckerchief and slide. The Scout shirt, shorts, socks, and slide can be purchased at the Scout Store at 10131 National Boulevard in West Los Angeles, 310-839-9905 (call first) or the Scout shop at 16525 Sherman Way Van Nuys, CA 91406, (818) 781-1296. You can also purchase these items on line, but you may have trouble getting the patches. We will provide you with a Troop 223 purple neckerchief and 223 number patch at the scout meeting. In additional to purchasing a scout Class A shirt, which WEBELOS already have, you will need to purchase 2 green eplets. You will also need to purchase a West Los Angeles Council patch and a purple Fluer de lis patch. If you are Webelos and have the Class A Webelos shirt, you do not have to purchase these patches, as they are already on your shirt. Any type of slide for the neckerchief will do. The only patches, which can remain on the WEBELOS shirt for Boy Scouts is the Arrow of Light and any religious patch earned.
Those interested in being Assistant Scout Masters (ASM’s) will be asked to fill out an application (which will be provided), if you have not already filled it out. You will also be provided with Troop 223 staff shirts, which along with your scout pants (which you will need to purchase – they are the same pants the scouts wear), will be your Class B uniform. You will also need to purchase a Class A shirt, which is the same as the scouts have. You will need to get the same patches. You will need to purchase scout pants, scout socks and a slide (any slide will do). We will provide neckerchiefs and troop numbers. When wearing the Class A uniform, the collar should be tucked in. Please note; the scout pants are actually zip-off pants. Scouts must always wear them as shorts, unless on a back pack. Adults may wear them as long pants.
